Students will learn how to identify rock and stone for knapping, learn basics on turning raw materials into stone points or knife blades and how to haft wood the stone into wood or antler handles.

Do you want to learn how to make fire 100% off the land? Join us for a day of friction fire where we will teach you how to identify local materials and build reliable primitive fire kits. Students will receive professional instruction from expert instructors and learn the art of friction fire.

Hand Drill Off The Land

Class Outline
In this class, students can expect to do some moderate cross-country hiking to gather materials. Students will learn how to identify several desert plants species that are preferable for hand drill and primitive fire as a whole. They will learn how to craft a functional hand drill fire set, and how to create compound spindles for when ideal spindles can not be found. Students will learn various stances and techniques for hand drill firemaking, how to build a Fire-lay, and basic knife skills. No prior experience necessary.
Students should bring food that can be eaten cold (sandwiches, fruit etc). Students will need to bring backpacks (nothing fancy, an old school bag will be fine), water bottles and filters or disinfectant tablets if they have them. They will also need a sharp knife and clothes suited to the weather conditions of the day.
Ages 16 and up. Students will need to be in good enough physical shape that they can hike with a light pack for 2 hours, and should wear footwear that can get wet. Students should bring extra socks as well.

The class will meet at the Shivwits gas station at 8:30am and will leave to caravan to the class site at 8:45. The class will run until about 5pm but may go as late as 6.
