How to Prepare for the Survival Fire Skills Master Class

We’re excited to have you join us for an immersive weekend of hands-on survival training. To help you get the most from your experience, please take the following steps to prepare before arrival:

Complete Required Forms

Before participating in the class, all students must submit the following:

Liability Waiver (required for all participants)
Medical & Emergency Contact Form (for safety and preparation)
Privacy Policy Acknowledgment

You’ll receive these forms by email after registration. Please print, fill out, and bring them with you—or email them in advance if allowed.

Purchase and Pack Required Gear

Use the Gear List to make sure you have everything needed for the course. Key items include:

Fixed blade knife
50 ft. paracord
Gloves, safety glasses
Tent, sleeping gear
Meals, water, and personal cooking supplies

Many of these tools are used immediately during class, so don’t wait until the last minute to gather your supplies. If you have any questions about gear quality or alternatives, feel free to contact us!

A map and directions to the training location will be provided after registration. Please review the map ahead of time, and plan for extra travel time if you’re unfamiliar with the area.

Some locations may have limited cell service, so download directions in advance.
Parking, basecamp setup, and check-in info will also be provided in the follow-up email.

Course Overview:

Fire is life in a survival situation—providing heat, light, safety, water purification, cooking ability, and morale. In this hands-on weekend course, you'll learn how to confidently create fire in almost any condition using both modern survival tools and ancient primitive fire-making techniques.

This master class will build your fire confidence from the ground up.

Class outline includes:

Modern Fire

Ferro rod & striker – Technique, tinder selection, and effective fire lays
Solar lens fire – Harnessing the sun with natural and artificial lenses
Battery and steel wool – Urban survival fire-starting methods
Fire from modern tools and everyday items in wet or windy conditions

Primitive Fire

Bow drill fire – Crafting, carving, and successfully using your own bow drill kit
Hand drill fire – Advanced technique and practice with natural materials
Flint and steel – Using traditional carbon steel strikers and natural charcloth
Coal tending and transport – Keeping a coal alive while traveling
Fire lays and structures – Lean-to, log cabin, tipi, star fire, and Dakota fire hole

How to identify and prepare the best natural tinder and kindling
Understanding the science of fire: heat, fuel, oxygen, and the fire triangle
How to make your own charcloth and punkwood
Troubleshooting failed fires and adapting techniques in real-world conditions

What To Bring

Overnight Weekend Course | Be Prepared, Stay Safe, Learn Fire

This is a hands-on, outdoor course with one overnight stay. Please come prepared to camp in a primitive setting. Weather can change quickly, and proper gear ensures you stay comfortable, safe, and focused on learning.

Required Gear – Fire Skills Tools & Survival Essentials

Fixed Blade Knife (Full tang recommended – essential for carving fire kits)
50 ft. Paracord (550 cord or bankline – used for bow drills and more)
Small Saw or Hatchet (For harvesting wood and carving kits)
Work Gloves (Protect your hands while carving and handling fire)
Safety Glasses (Required during carving and striking flint/steel)

Water & Cooking

Water Bottle or Canteen (At least 1 liter)
Additional Drinking Water (Minimum 1 gallon)
Personal Cooking Gear (Pot, cup, utensils – if planning to cook meals)
Meals & Snacks (Bring enough food for 2 days: 1 lunch, 1 dinner, 1 breakfast, 1 lunch)

Camping & Overnight Gear

Tent, Tarp Shelter, or Bivy (Simple overnight shelter setup)
Sleeping Bag & Pad (Appropriate for nighttime temps)
Headlamp or Flashlight (With extra batteries)
Weather-Appropriate Clothing (Layered system for hot days and cold nights)
Rain Gear (Jacket or poncho)
Extra Socks & Clothes (You’ll likely get dirty during fire practice)

Optional But Recommended:

Notebook & Pen (To take notes on fire techniques and material prep)
Camp Chair or Pad (For sitting during instruction)
Tinder Materials (Optional – natural or homemade to test and compare)
Personal First Aid Kit

Important Notes:

All carving and fire work will be supervised, but safety is your responsibility.
Come prepared for a full weekend outdoors, regardless of weather.
Bring gear that is durable and functional—this is a skills-based survival class, not car camping.
You’ll leave with the skills and experience to start a fire with confidence—and your own carved bow drill kit!
