A Wilderness Skills Expedition
Embark on a full-day adventure tailored for homeschool groups & Families, combining hiking with comprehensive wilderness skills education. This expedition offers students a unique opportunity to explore, Utah’s stunning landscapes while learning practical survival techniques. The day includes navigation using natural markers, identifying edible plants, constructing simple shelters, fire making skills, and building primitive bowls. A highlight of the day is a scenic lunch stop, providing a perfect backdrop for reflection and discussion about the day’s learning.
Survival Education Hike

Step into the wild with our Youth and Family Hiking Expedition Class—a journey that blends adventure with hands-on learning to inspire confidence, curiosity, and resilience.
As you hike through stunning natural landscapes, you'll explore essential survival skills like fire-making, building shelters, crafting coal-burned bowls, and navigating with natural markers. Along the way, you'll discover the incredible world of wild edible plants, connecting with nature in a way that’s both educational and unforgettable. Course Cost: $150 per Family
Please arrive by 8:45 am and be prepared to start hiking out by 9:00.
What To Expect
Prepare for an engaging and educational adventure! Our wilderness expedition hikes are easy-going and rated suitable for most students, with a focus on enjoying the outdoors and learning at a comfortable pace. Expect to stop frequently as we explore wild resources along the trail, using these moments to teach valuable skills like fire-making, shelter-building, land navigation, and identifying edible plants.
Please note that weather conditions can change unexpectedly, so plan accordingly by dressing in layers and bringing weather-appropriate gear. This day hike is all about connecting with nature, gaining confidence in the wild, and having fun in a supportive environment!
Food
Food is not provided. Please bring your own food for the day. We recommend bringing lightweight lunch meals and snacks that don't need to be heated. Please eat breakfast prior to starting the hike.
Water
While on the hike anyone who need water will need to use a filter from local wild streams, creeks, and reservoirs. Please bring your own water and enough for the day.
Emergencies
Each instructor will carry a basic med kit for first aid use. Students may bring their own first aid kits as well or use ours if needed. Instructors are WFR certified and are able to act accordingly in emergencies.
Instructors will have a Garmin Mini In Reach on them at all times in case of a severe medical emergency situation.
Drop-Off Information for Wilderness Skills Expedition
For our Survival Day Hike Expedition, all students must have a completed registration and waiver form submitted prior to the start of the hike. Students under the age of 10 or whom have medical needs are required to have a parent or guardian accompany them throughout the hike. Parents attending as chaperones are welcome to join at no additional cost, as their support ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for younger participants. Drop-off and pick-up details, including location and times, will be provided upon registration. We look forward to an exciting day of adventure and learning!
Ages: All ages are welcome, though the typical ages range is 11-15 years old.
